How car on-road price & EMI work
The on-road price is what you actually pay to drive a car home: the ex-showroom price plus road tax, first-year insurance, 1% TCS on cars above ₹10 lakh (creditable against your income tax), and registration and FASTag charges. The single biggest variable is road tax, which each state sets on a slab basis — from about 6% in Gujarat to 22% in Kerala — so the same car can cost several lakh more on-road in one state than another.
Your EMI is then calculated on the financed amount (on-road price minus your down payment) using the reducing-balance formula. A larger down payment and a shorter tenure both cut your total interest. Use the car loan EMI calculator to model the loan, the prepayment calculator to see how part-payments shrink interest, and the loan rates page to compare current car loan rates before you buy.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the on-road price of a car in India?
The on-road price is the ex-showroom price plus road tax (RTO), first-year insurance, 1% TCS on cars above ₹10 lakh, and registration/FASTag charges. It is typically 15–30% higher than the ex-showroom price, driven mostly by your state’s road tax.
How much road tax do I pay on a car?
Road tax is set by each state and is slab-based on the ex-showroom price. For premium vehicles it ranges from about 6% in Gujarat to 22% in Kerala, with several states taxing diesel higher than petrol and adding small cesses on top.
How is car loan EMI calculated?
Car loans use the reducing-balance EMI formula: EMI = P×r×(1+r)^n / ((1+r)^n−1), where P is the loan amount, r the monthly interest rate and n the number of months. Use our car loan EMI calculator to compute it for your loan.
Which state has the lowest car road tax?
Among the major markets, Gujarat has the lowest road tax (a flat ~6%), while Kerala (up to 22%) and Karnataka and Telangana (around 18–20%) are among the highest. The difference can be several lakh rupees on a premium SUV.
